 JOB TITLE: High School Equivalency (HSE) Academic Coach (Evening) 
COMPENSATION: $21.00/hour 
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt, Part-time, 10.5 hours/week 
SHIFT: Tuesday – Thursday, 6:00PM – 8:30PM plus paid planning time 
SUPERVISOR: Sr. Director of Adult Education 
LOCATION: Pottstown, PA 
 
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: 
YWCA Tri-County Area (YW3CA) provides high school equivalency (HSE) instruction to adults who are in pursuit of their high school diploma. The program serves a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and culturally different members of our community. The successful candidate must be comfortable working with learners who had previous negative learning experiences and must be sincerely interested in helping all students achieve. 

YWCA is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated instructor whose primary responsibility is to prepare adult learners to pass their exam for their high school diploma. The HSE program uses a variety of resources including web-based supplemental programs. The candidate who is interested in this position must be able to teach a range of academic skills from low academic to high school level content. Instruction is in reading, math, social studies, science, and writing. The candidate must be able to plan and implement appropriate instruction to close learning gaps that will help students move forward in their learning. The candidate will avoid lecture-style teaching and engage the students in conversation, appropriate learning activities, and practice to advance their skills learned. 

The candidate must have previous experience teaching the content areas in either the high school or HSE programs with a sincere interest in encouraging individuals to achieve their goals. The candidate must be able to create a positive learning environment for adult learners. 

YWCA aims to continue to provide ongoing professional learning support for all staff. Trainings are scheduled so that all staff members can participate. Professional development and staff meetings are held once a month. The successful candidate is expected to participate in these trainings. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (Includes, But Not Limited to): 
  • Teach High School Equivalency (HSE) class to adults with a wide range of prior education. 
  • Empower students with a heart-felt message of support. 
  • Assist students in building their digital literacy skills. 
  • Use interactive teaching methods to engage students in conversations, hands-on activities, and practice, avoiding lecture-style instruction. 
  • Create lesson plans aligned with College and Career Readiness Standards. 
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student attendance, services provided, and progress. 
  • Design and implement supplemental activities to reinforce key concepts and support student progress. 
  • Adhere to all guidelines set by YWCA, PA Dept of Education, and the web-based program developer. 
  • Work closely with other team members in Pottstown and Norristown. 
  • Participate in agency and state professional development training. 
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of position expectations.

  • An understanding of the principles of teaching adult learners and establishing a productive learning environment. 
  • A strong commitment to serve the local community and projects attitude of respect, empathy, and cultural sensitivity to all. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in relation to program and student data. 
  • Ability to create an environment that conveys the message that YWCA believes and supports each student’s success 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Self-motivation and flexibility, willingness to welcome the opportunity to further develop skills and accept challenges. 
  • Attends to detail and accuracy and able to multi-task. 
  • Strong organization skills and excellent time management. 
  • Comfortability with technology (laptops, Smart Board, etc.) including strong computer literacy skills. 
  • Reliable, good problem solver, able to work independently, as well as in a team environment. 
  • Able to accept guidance and feedback and support teamwork and efforts. 
Education & Experience: 
  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree required (BA or BS minimum).
  • Prior experience working with adults in education or related fields.
