Job Title: English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) Academic Coach
FLSA Status: Non-exempt, Part-time, 8 hours/week
Shift: Monday & Tuesday, 6:00PM-8:30PM
Supervisor: Sr. Director of Adult Education
Location: Pottstown, PA
 
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
YWCA Tri-County Area (YW3CA) provides English classes to adults whose first language is not English and want to learn English literacy skills so that they can get a job, navigate through the community, or continue their education.
 
YWCA is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated ESL instructor whose primary responsibility is to teach the introductory level class of ESL students. The ESL program uses a web-based platform for instruction. The candidate who is interested in this position must have strong computer skills and be comfortable in using the computer and web-based program as a tool for instruction. As part of the instructional process using the web-based program, the instructor will help students develop their digital literacy skills. The instructor will implement supplemental activities to reinforce learning. The instructor will avoid lecture-style teaching and engage the students in conversation, activities, and practice to advance their skills learned.
 
The candidate should have previous experience teaching ESL and a sincere interest in working with individuals from other cultures, languages, and countries. The candidate must be able to create a positive learning environment for adult learners. Training will be provided to learn how to implement the web-based instruction program. The candidate will be working with a team of teachers who support and collaborate with each other.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (Includes, But Not Limited to):
  • Support ESL learners in listening, speaking, writing and reading the English language.
  • Develops a student-engagement learning environment with students actively engaged in group as well as individual activities.
  • Engages students in communication activities that help further their skills on the job and within the community.
  • Comfortable working with adults whose experiences are other than the American culture.
  • Empowers others with a heart-felt message of support.
  • Understands the principles of acquiring a second language. Experience teaching ESL.
  • Understands the principles of teaching adult learners and establish a learning environment. Uses appropriate strategies and activities to engage the adult learner. Avoids dependence on lecture-style teaching.
  • Explains, demonstrates, and provides opportunities for students to demonstrate core concepts.
  • Maintain documentation of students served and student progress.
  • Create supplemental lessons where needed.
  • Follow all guidelines as required by YWCA and the web-based program developer.
  • Participates in training to be able to implement and monitor the web-based program.
  • Work closely with other team members in Pottstown and Norristown
  • Participate in agency and state professional development training.

Education & Experience 
  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree required (BA or BS minimum)
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish a plus.
  • Experience working with adults in education or related fields.
Compensation: $21.00 per hour
